About Michelle

My life goes in zigs and zags – as does my art.

About 3 years ago I closed my clothing store downtown. I loved the store. It occupied my thoughts, time and energy. I treated it like an art project – it was beautiful and fun – but as in life, it was time to move on. I’ve raised alpacas, been a garden antiques dealer, an accessories buyer in retail, always reinventing myself. The thread in my life has been art, my mother was a painter and gardener. Her early tutelage made me appreciate art and design in all forms. I look at art as one of the most interesting and enduring things I know. Ceramic sculpture and painting call to me. I love the tactile aspect of sculpture. My brain seems to think in 3D – I dream sculpture, solve technical problems, fantasize surface. I’ve been told I work “like a squirrel on crack” so the physicality, movement, and craziness is very appealing. I love to work big! Sometimes I have to slow myself down and dig into small detail: an exercise in control. I never run out of ideas for sculpture. Little glimpses of people (I’ve been known to take surreptitious photos of interesting faces), the geography and geology of my hikes, my wonderful garden, the faces of my beautiful granddaughters. Everyday life is inspiring and gigs me along. I recently turned 60 (eek!), it’s a time of freedom and being able to be selfish, really a gift. I am so happy in the studio.

My hope is that my work will connect with you – and you will smile.

Hiking

I discovered hiking just a few years ago, though I have always walked around my farm. It’s as important as food to me now.

Roses have always been a part of my life. My Grandma had a little rose garden that I loved being in with her. I now have about 350 rose bushes!
